  • 2013 Motivation and mission in the public sector: Evidence from the World Values SurveyAbstract: It is well-recognised that workers may have intrinsic – as well as extrinsic – motivations. Previous studies have identified that public sector workers typically have a higher level of intrinsic motivation, compared to workers in the private sector. This paper compares (measures of) intrinsic motivation among 30,000+ workers in the two sectors across 51 countries using data from the World Values Survey. We find that public sector workers exhibit higher intrinsic motivation in many countries, but that this is not a universal relationship. One possibility is that public sector mission may influence whether or not motivated workers choose to work in the sector. In support of this, we show that the level of (public) corruption – which plausibly affects mission – can explain some of the variation across countries in the proportion of motivated workers in the sector. • Masked Heroes: endogenous anonymity in charitable giving Abstract: Previous work on anonymous donations has looked almost exclusively at exogenous anonymity. This study considers endogenous anonymity, approaching it from two angles. We present stylised facts of anonymous giving, drawn from large dataset of donations on be- half of runners in the London Marathon, finding that not only are anonymous donations quite likely to be larger than public ones, but that those who follow an anonymous donation donate around 4% more than had the same donation been made publicly. Our main contribution is to explain this phenomenon through a signalling model, where foregoing prestige through anonymity signals the charity's quality.Length: 45 pages

  • Peer effects in charitable giving: Evidence from the (running) field Abstract: There is a widespread belief that peer effects are important in charitable giving, but surprisingly little evidence on how donors respond to their peers in practice. Analysing a unique dataset of donations to online fundraising pages, we show that peer effects are positive and sizeable: a £10 increase in the mean of past donations increases giving by £2.50, on average. We show that donations respond to large and small donations and to changes in the mode. We find little evidence that donations signal charity quality – our preferred explanation is that donors use information on (the distribution of) earlier donations to decide what is appropriate for them to give.
