Business Intelligence is today a real field of economic activities in itself. This can be explained by three series of factors studied in this document : the role of information in the global competition based on innovation and in the organisation of global firms ; the « privatisation » of the national systems of Business Intelligence ; the progress of techniques of information processing and broadcasting. The overlapping of those three factors results in the development without precedent of the industry (new actors ; new professions) and the market of information. Strategic information, while being integrated in the process of organisation and realisation of production, facilitate innovation and improve the management of the firms' assets, and therefore are becoming some more and more expensive goods. Thus, only the larger firms, which have important human, financial, scientific and technical resources have access to and appropriate themselves those precious information
