Uppsatsen tar sin utgångspunkt i att en rad ekonomiska ”fullskaleexperiment” har visat att den ekonomiska friheten definierad av samhällets institutioner – dess spelregler – har avgörande betydelse för den ekonomiska tillväxten och det allmänna välståndet, i synnerhet uppkomsten och skyddet av den privata äganderätten. Den industriella revolutionen, planekonomiernas kollaps och Västeuropas framväxt som en ekonomiskt, militärt och politiskt dominerande region under medeltiden är sådana exempel. Har denna insikt inkorporerats i den nationalekonomiska forskarutbildningen? Frågan undersöks genom att studera förekomsten och innebörden av begreppen economic freedom, institution och property rights i de läroböcker som används i svensk forskarutbildning i nationalekonomi. Tanken är att en lärobok sammanfattar och presenterar det som anses vara den rådande kunskapen inom ett ämne, och att de begrepp som anses centrala utvecklas i läroboken. Analogt antas de begrepp som anses oväsentliga, eller som ännu inte har blivit inkorporerade i teorin, inte förekomma i någon nämnvärd utsträckning. Undersökningen visar att begreppen knappast förekommer, och att de, när de gör det, har en ”urvattnad” innebörd. Konsekvenserna av detta diskuteras.
