Abstract

Our study examines the influence of government intervention and green innovation on renewable energy consumption using the dataset from the top 50 developed and developing countries that account for the most renewable energy consumption from 2000 to 2020. We find that government intervention and green innovation positively affect renewable energy consumption. Additionally, our quasi-experimental approach using the difference-in-differences (DID) methodology reveals that the 2015 Paris Agreement significantly boosts renewable energy consumption among signatory countries, thereby supporting the achievement of multiple Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) including “SDG 7 Affordable and Clean Energy”, “SDG 11 Sustainable cities and communities”, and “SDG 13 Climate Action”. These insights are crucial for sustainable growth and green innovation strategies and offer significant value to policymakers, investors, and regulators.
