Abstract
Small pig holders in Vietnam face obstacles when feed costs increase daily. Therefore, identifying a cost-effective feeding mode can help farmers cope with this problem. This study compared the effects of two popular feeding modes, commercial feed and combination feed (mixing instant feed with agricultural byproducts), on the technical efficiency (TE) of small pig holders in Vietnam. The data envelopment analysis approach and meta-frontier were used to measure and compare the TE of commercial and combination feeds. Additionally, this study used a Tobit regression to analyze the factors affecting TE. TE was 75.06, 86.56, and 78.76% with the meta-frontier, commercial, and combination feeding group frontiers, respectively. The corresponding meta-technology ratios of these groups were 83.89 and 97.24%, respectively, indicating that the TE of the combined feeding mode is higher than that of the commercial feeding mode. This finding confirms the economics of combination feed in the context of increasing the import price of raw materials for feed production. The results of the Tobit models show that the education of household heads, access to credit, pig density, family income, herd size, and percentage of own-produced piglets are determinants of TE.
