Le travail des enfants et la pauvreté en Afrique : un réexamen appliqué au Burkina Faso

Abstract

[fre] L’étude examine l’impact de la pauvreté sur le travail des enfants en 1998 et 2003. Premièrement, l’«axiome de luxe » semble relativement robuste. L’analyse économétrique spatiale montre que la proportion des enfants de 5-14 ans économiquement actifs est supérieure dans les ménages « pauvres », comparativement aux «non pauvres ». Deuxièmement, le travail des enfants peut être le reflet d'une stratégie des ménages visant à minimiser le risque d’interruption du flux des ressources. Ces résultats doivent être rapprochés, d’une part, de l’augmentation de la pauvreté globale entre 1998 et 2003, accompagnée d’une baisse de la pauvreté durable, et d’une croissance de la pauvreté transitoire, et, d’autre part, du ralentissement du rythme du processus de redistribution, via les envois de fonds de Côte d’Ivoire. [eng] The study examines the impact of poverty on child labor. First, the “ luxury axiom ” seems relatively robust. Econometric analysis shows that the proportion of economically active children aged 5-14 is definitely higher in “ poor ” households than in “ non-poor ” households. Second, child labor may reflect household strategy aimed at minimizing the risk of interruption in the income stream. Such results should be interpreted in the context of two phenomena : (1) the increase in total poverty between 1998 and 2003, which involved a fall in lasting poverty and a rise in transient poverty ; (2) a slowdown in the redistribution process conducted through remittances from Côte d’Ivoire .
