Abstract

This study examines the impact of sukuk issuances on the liquidity, credit risk, and profitability of Islamic banks, utilizing quarterly panel data from 12 countries covering the period 2013–2024. Employing advanced panel data econometric techniques, the analysis explores whether sukuk markets contribute to the financial stability and performance of Islamic banks. The findings reveal that sukuk issuances significantly enhance bank liquidity and improve asset quality by reducing non-performing loans. However, the direct effect of sukuk issuances on profitability is found to be statistically insignificant. Instead, the study identifies that sukuk markets indirectly support bank profitability through improvements in liquidity and capital adequacy. These results underscore the importance of developing robust sukuk markets and strengthening regulatory frameworks to maximize the benefits for Islamic banks. The research contributes to the existing literature by providing comprehensive, multi-country evidence on the role of sukuk in Islamic banking, and it offers policy recommendations aimed at enhancing the effectiveness and sustainability of sukuk markets. Overall, the study highlights the strategic role of sukuk as a financial instrument in promoting financial stability and resilience within the Islamic banking sector.
