SMARTRIQS: A Simple Method Allowing Real-Time Respondent Interaction in Qualtrics Surveys

Abstract

SMARTRIQS is an open-source solution that allows researchers to design and implement interactive online experiments using the popular survey platform Qualtrics. Unlike other existing platforms that allow real-time interaction, SMARTRIQS does not require any programming skills or installing any software. SMARTRIQS is fully integrated into Qualtrics: researchers create and edit their interactive experiments in the standard survey editor after importing the generic SMARTRIQS survey template. Moreover, all data resulting from real-time interaction are saved in Qualtrics. The potential applications of SMARTRIQS in experimental economics and finance are very versatile, including but not limited to experiments featuring cooperation, coordination, competition, allocation, investment, auction, and other market interactions. Researchers working in related fields (organizational research, consumer research, decision science, social psychology, political science, etc.) might also benefit from using SMARTRIQS, as it offers a convenient and simple method of studying real-time social interaction, including communication, collaborative work, collective decision-making, and voting behavior.
