Stratégie des étudiants et choix d’orientation: Une analyse expérimentale de l’engorgement

Abstract

Bien que les étudiants ne fassent pas de calculs explicites du taux de rendement, ils ont tendance a réagir aux changements et aux évolutions affectant les diverses filières de formation. Pour Diebolt (2001), la répartition des étudiants dans les différentes universités dépend des avantages comparatifs de ces dernières en terme de salaires espérés et de travail disponible dans les secteurs professionnels correspondants. Nos premiers résultats économétriques (Jaoul, 2004ab ; Jaoul-Grammare, 2006) validant en grande partie la théorie de l’engorgement, ne permettaient pas de réellement s’interroger sur le comportement – rationnel ou non – des individus. Aussi, en prolongement de ces travaux, l’objectif de cet article est d’analyser, par une approche expérimentale, les décisions des étudiants dans leurs stratégies de carrières universitaires. Nous proposons aux sujets expérimentés de choisir entre 3 jeux, dont les gains et le nombre de joueurs sont variables. Nous complétons l’expérience par un questionnaire verbal. Si l’expérimentation menée révèle que les individus sont sensibles au gain et au nombre de places disponibles dans leur choix, validant ainsi la théorie de l’engorgement, la partie verbale indique que le choix d’études dépend essentiellement d’une attirance pour la matière.
