Weathering the storm: the impact of the Vaia storm on tourism flows

Abstract

This paper analyzes the effects of an extreme wind event on the tourism sector in an Italian alpine region. The findings reveal that, in the second and third years following the shock, municipalities in the top quintile of storm damage saw a reduction in summer stays of between 17% and 23%. This decline, likely driven by the destruction of natural amenities and its adverse impact on tourism demand, is particularly severe in areas with fewer cultural resources and lower levels of foreign tourism. The results underscore the vulnerability of the tourism industry to extreme weather events and highlight the importance of policies aimed at preventing and mitigating the effects of such shocks.
