Gasto público y convergencia regional en Colombia

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to find if there is empirical evidence that supports the convergence hypothesis in per capita income among Colombian departments. The statistical techniques used allow the analysis of departmental income distribution dynamics and the effect that public consumption and public investment have on it. The results show that the 1985-1996 period was characterized by a high persistence in the distribution of income per capita among departments and that public expenditure, specially investment, has affected the relative position of some departments but not the whole distribution dynamics.
