A microsimulation study of curb space operational strategies and user behaviors

Abstract

This paper introduces a Simulation of Urban MObility (SUMO) microscopic simulation model to examine curb space interactions and policy impacts. The model investigates user behaviors under different operational scenarios and user characteristics. Our study focuses on heterogeneous curb space zones derived from empirical observations in Ann Arbor, Michigan, to understand how user behaviors influence system performance. Through experiments, we explore dynamic responses to curb space policies based on individual curb space user traits and the actions of other users. In particular, we investigate the interactions between curb and non-curb users, the importance of accounting for curb user destinations in infrastructure design, and the effects of unlawful curb activities by some users on the utilities of other users and overall road performance. We propose practical measures to mitigate adverse effects, offering insights for developing curb space management strategies in dynamic urban settings.
