The role of renewable energy sources on the path to sustainable development for OECD countries: Considering the three pillars of sustainability

Abstract

The integration of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into energy policies has become an increasingly important issue on today's global agenda. In order to achieve the SDGs, policy decisions must consider economic, social, and environmental dimensions in a holistic manner. Therefore, this study examines the impact of renewable energy sources on sustainable development in 33 OECD countries for the period 2000–2019. For this purpose, economic, social, environmental sustainability and sustainable development indices of OECD countries are constructed using Principal Component Analysis. Afterwards, the impact of renewable energy sources on sustainable development and its sub-dimensions are analyzed with the Panel ARDL Method. In this way, the impact of each renewable energy source on sustainable development and its dimensions has been examined both individually and as a whole. The results show that the total renewable energy sources, solar, wind and biomass energy have a positive impact on sustainable development in the long-run, while hydroelectricity and geothermal have a negative impact. The System GMM method was applied to assess the robustness of the results. The System GMM findings are generally consistent with the Panel ARDL results. The study makes an important contribution to the literature by separately examining the impacts of renewable energy sources on different dimensions of sustainable development.
