The impact of regional population mobility on the digital transformation of manufacturing firms: Evidence from the Yangtze river delta

Abstract

Due to economic development inequality, population mobility is a prominent phenomenon in China. This study delves into the impact of regional population mobility on the digital transformation of manufacturing firms. Based on the Yangtze River Delta evidence, this research finds that regional population mobility has accelerated the digital transformation in manufacturing industries. The results hold after solving endogeneity issues. Further analysis reveals that the effect is achieved by enhanced innovation efficiency and higher educational levels among employees. Our study highlights the importance of population mobility in facilitating digitalization, thereby enriching the relevant literature.
