Abstract

In context of the unsustainable risks associated with poverty and climate change, as well as the growing global population, it is essential for the BRICS economies to prioritize food security and increase food production. To this end, this study investigates the influence of water resources, renewable energy use, mobile phone technology, agricultural land, fertilizer application, and agricultural labor on food production. To explore these relationships, the Method of Moments Quantile Regression (MM-QR) approach is employed to estimate the panel data spanning from 1995 to 2020. The results reveal that water resources, renewable energy use, agricultural land, and mobile phone technology substantially increase food production across all quantiles of the food production distribution. These findings are further supported by robustness checks using Feasible Generalized Least Squares (FGLS) and Driscoll-Kraay Standard Errors (DKSE) methods. Moreover, the outcomes of the Dumitrescu and Hurlin (D-H) causality test confirm a statistically significant bidirectional causal connection running from selected variables (i.e., water resources, agricultural land, and mobile phone technology, and agricultural labor) to food production. This study further proposes policy recommendations for BRICS economies based on econometric results, aiming to enhance food security and boost grain production. The findings provide critical insights for the design of integrated resource policies that enhance food security and support the achievement of sustainability goals in BRICS economies.
