Abstract

Parent entrepreneurs are known to play a major role in shaping their children’s entrepreneurial characteristics, particularly in their role as entrepreneurial role models. This study highlights the importance of affective dimensions of entrepreneurial role models by examining the impact of a parent’s entrepreneurial passion on their children’s entrepreneurial attitudes. We argue that this relationship is dependent upon the nature of communications and interactions within the family. Using data from 164 children of entrepreneurs, the results suggest that children form a positive entrepreneurial attitude when they perceive their parents to be passionate, and the effect is strongest in consensual families who adopt high levels of both conversation and conformity communication patterns. The contributions of the findings to entrepreneurship and family business research together with future research directions are discussed.
