Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of land fragmentation on farm performance in the Brittany region of France for 2007. To do so, performance indicators (technical efficiency, pure technical efficiency and scale efficiency) calculated with Farm Accountancy Data Network (FADN) were regressed on several fragmentation descriptors calculated at the farm level using data from the cartographic field pattern registry (RPG). However, matching the two data bases using sorting and a propensity score was necessary beforehand. The results show that land fragmentation a measured by the number of plots, average size of plots, and average distance between plots were positively related respectively to technical efficiency, technical pure efficiency and scale efficiency. They also show that efficiency and the impact of the number of plots differs across farm specializations (Otex). Contrary to most studies in the literature, our study revealed that the number of plot can be positively related to farms performance. Its impact depends on the specialization of the farms, as a consolidation program reducing the number of plots may decrease farm performance in some cases.
