Migrant remittances in the state of Kerala, India

Abstract

Kerala, like most other countries or regions therein produces a heterogeneous group of migrants, living and working virtually all over the world. Admittedly, a larger proportion of migrants, which range from medical practitioners, accountants, lawyers etc. as highly skilled professional, to vehicle drivers, mechanics, construction workers as relatively unskilled workers are located in different countries of the Middle East. The trend has been increasing over time and it naturally attracted attention from various quarters trying to comprehend the impact of such large exodus on the regional and national levels. While many such studies look at the socio-economic, demographic and political consequences of migration and remittances in Kerala as already discussed, this particular chapter offers some specific assessments that can serve as important components for the overall macroeconomic picture of the province.
