Improving the Lot of Indian Farmers

Abstract

About a hundred years ago, Dr. B. R. Ambedkar had talked about moving people out of farming to solve not only the problem of rural poverty but also of overall development. This article argues that Ambedkar’s recommendation continues to be valid even today. Compared to most countries that are otherwise comparable, India has fallen woefully short of providing opportunities and incentives for small farmers to leave farming.
