Solar resource assessment for rural electrification and industrial development in the Yucatan Peninsula (Mexico)

Abstract

The global solar resource in Mexico should be assessed to develop its industry and rural electrification. The aim of this work is to present an assessment of global solar radiation from meteorological stations and satellite data, which have been validated and provide extensive coverage, in order to develop a methodology to use these data with acceptable accuracy. A statistical method is presented to determinate the global solar resource in the Yucatan Peninsula; linear regression, determination coefficient (R2) and RMSE (Root Mean Square Error) have been used. The performance of this correlation shows the accuracy of data used. The relationship between 7 Automatic Meteorological Station (AMSs) of the National Meteorological Service (NMS) of Mexico which belongs to the Comisión Nacional del Agua (CAN) of Mexico and 6 meteorological stations from the Instituto Nacional de Investigaciones Forestales, Agrícolas y Pecuarias (INIFAP) versus 13 points from Surface Meteorology and Solar Energy (SMSE) of the Atmospheric Science Data Center (ASDC) which belongs to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) at the same geographic position was accomplished. Geographic Information System (GIS) was used to perform 13 maps of average solar global resource showing areas and months with high solar global resource. The North and West of the Yucatan Peninsula have a solar resource greater than 5.8kWh/m2/day. The months with the highest resource are April and May. These data open new perspectives for rural electrification and industrial development in the Yucatan Peninsula.
