Disaster exposure and residential solar adoption: Urban evidence from Japan

Abstract

Despite extensive research on solar photovoltaic (PV) adoption, limited attention has been given to the role of disaster experiences in accelerating the shift toward sustainable energy. This study investigates how earthquake events influence household solar adoption in Japan, leveraging a comprehensive panel dataset of Japanese regions. Employing a quasi-experimental design, we find that, following the disaster, household solar panel installations increase significantly more in affected areas than in unaffected regions. Our results underscore the behavioral response to disasters as a pivotal yet underexamined driver of renewable energy adoption. Additionally, we estimate the potential reductions in carbon emissions associated with this increased solar adoption. These findings offer actionable insights for policymakers aiming to design post-disaster policies that foster renewable energy adoption and enhance energy resilience.
