Abstract

The advance of artificial intelligence is redefining the organization of activities, influencing the distribution of jobs and how tasks are combined within occupations. In the European space, these changes manifest unevenly, because of differences between economies in terms of employment structure and the profile of economic activities. Considering this framework, the current article examines how occupational exposure to artificial intelligence varies across European economies, with a focus on the structural dimension of these variations. The analysis is built on a descriptive quantitative approach, using internationally comparable secondary data sets. Employment information is combined with standardized occupational indicators that capture the potential influence of artificial intelligence on work tasks. Moreover, the study covers a large sample of European economies and operates with aggregations at the level of major occupational groups, classified according to the intensity of exposure to AI.The results obtained indicate that a substantial proportion of employees work in occupations where AI has the potential to significantly change the content of work, especially in information processing and coordination activities. At the same time, systematic differences between economies emerge, associated with the degree of predominance of knowledge-intensive services over manual or contextual occupations. The findings also highlight that AI is generating a process of transformation that depends on existing occupational configurations, rather than a uniform impact. Regarding the added value, the present research could serve as a starting point for future analyses on skills adjustment, occupational mobility and the adaptation of European labor markets in the context of technological progress.
