Abstract

The article uses Garbuio and Wilden's (2018) analytical framework to analyse the entrepreneurial activities of a healthcare department manager in a Chinese public hospital. This framework distinguishes between activities at the micro, meso and macro levels. Using this analytical framework, the article shows that the director's activities help to strengthen the relationship of trust between doctors and patients and doctors' self-esteem by aligning their practices with their professional ethics and the philosophical principles of Yin and Yang. At a meso level, these micro-level activities create a Guanxi between the department and its patients. Finally, at a macro level this Guanxi evolves within a wider ecosystem involving a range of institutional and individual players.
