Abstract

This study undertakes a bibliometric analysis of the research landscape in corporate governance and sustainability, leveraging data from one of the leading academic databases, Scopus. Using Biblioshiny and VOSviewer, the present study examines a sample of 1296 studies to understand and analyze the research activity in corporate governance between 1990 and early 2023. Research triangulation, that is, coupling bibliometric analysis with content analysis, adds to the robustness of results and makes this study unique from existing bibliometric investigations. The study deploys performance analysis to identify and unearth the most impactful publications (1990–2023), the most relevant authors, sources, and nations based on their productivity and impact. Using science mapping, this study also unearths the conceptual structure of existing publications (keyword co‐occurrence analysis) and tries to identify collaboration patterns amongst authors (co‐authorship analysis) and countries (country collaboration analysis). While keyword co‐occurrence analysis probes into the major themes through science mapping, thematic maps suggest directions for future research agendas in tandem with content analysis. The findings provide academics and practitioners an in‐depth glance into otherwise unorganized and massive corporate governance and sustainability research spanning 33 years.
