Viewpoint: Male‐female wage differentials: how can that be?

Abstract

. The paper outlines the main empirical procedures that are used to document the male‐female wage differential and the extent to which it reflects discrimination. It then discusses the evidence on male‐female wage differentials – their existence, the extent to which they reflect discrimination, their changes over time and the factors that influence the gap. Particular attention is paid to more recent studies that control for a wider range of conventionally unobserved factors. Theoretical perspectives are then outlined, focusing on the issue of how discriminatory wage differentials can survive given the forces of competition. The impacts of policy initiatives are also discussed. Les différentiels de salaires entre hommes et femmes : comment se fait‐il qu’il en soit ainsi? Ce mémoire esquisse les principales méthodes utilisées pour évaluer la taille des différentiels de salaires entre hommes et femmes et établir jusqu’à quel point ils sont l’écho d’un phénomène de discrimination. On examine ensuite de façon critique les résultats de ces analyses – l’existence de différentiels, l’effet de discrimination, les changements dans le temps de ces différentiels, et les facteurs qui expliquent ces écarts. On porte une attention particulière à certaines études récentes qui normalisent pour tenir compte d’un éventail plus important de facteurs habituellement ignorés. On développe enfin certaines perspectives théoriques qui se concentrent sur la question de savoir comment des différentiels de salaires discriminatoires peuvent survivre dans un monde soumis aux forces de la concurrence. Les impacts de certaines politiques sont aussi examinés.
