Evaluation of the relationship between freight transport, energy consumption, economic growth and greenhouse gas emissions: the VECM approach

Abstract

This paper employs Granger causality test and variance decompositions to investigate the dynamic links between freight transport, energy consumption, economic growth, and greenhouse gas emissions for Tunisia over the period 1982–2016. The empirical results show that there is a bidirectional link between economic growth and freight transport and bidirectional link between freight transport and energy consumption. In addition, there is a unidirectional link from energy consumption to CO2 emissions and unidirectional link running from freight transport to CO2 emissions. Moreover, economic growth is responsible of CO2 emissions.
