Spatial effects of transportation infrastructure on the development of urban agglomeration integration: Evidence from the Yangtze River Economic Belt

Abstract

Urban agglomerations (UAs) rely on a developed transportation infrastructure (TI) network to form a close and diversified economic connection and promote urban agglomeration integration (UAI). Based on 2010–2020 panel data for 78 cities in the Yangtze River Economic Belt (YREB) UAs, this paper uses ArcGIS to reveal the UAI and TI spatial heterogeneity and spatiotemporal evolutionary characteristics and constructs a spatial Durbin model (SDM) to explore the TI spatial effects on the UAI and its subsystems. The results show the following: (1) From the perspective of UAI. The development of UAI in the YREB UAs shows a fluctuating upward trend, showing a step-like differential distribution in space between the east, the middle and the west, while the subcity agglomerations show a core radial distribution. Second, the economic connection between cities shows strong regional differentiation characteristics, and the connection between UAs needs to be strengthened. (2) From the perspective of TI, the overall spatiotemporal evolution characteristics and the UAI have a great overlap, but the growth trend is more obvious. In addition, the road connection presents the characteristics of multicenter radiation, the railway is the axis connection extending outward from the core city, and the aviation is a triangular hierarchical nested structure. (3) From the perspective of spatial effects, TI has an impact on the overall UAI. It has a significant promoting effect, and at the same time, it has a significant positive spatial effect on the science and technology industry (SI), factor markets (FM), and ecological environment (EE) subsystems, while it has a negative impact on public services (PS).
