The Hazards of Doing a Phd: An Analysis of Completion and Withdrawal Rates of British Phd Students in the 1980S

Abstract

The paper examines the completion and withdrawal rates for British PhD students, by using the 1986 national survey of 1980 graduates. The statistical analysis is carried out in a competing risks framework, based on the distributional assumptions of the generalized gamma family. The problem of thresholding of completion data is also addressed. We find considerable variability of completion rates across disciplines, gender and individuals' employment status while undertaking PhD research.
