Comparative analysis of the impact of COVID-19 by industry sector in Mali as of March 10, 2021

Abstract

This article discusses the impact of COVID-19 on industry sub-sectors by analyzing the evolution of industrial production and turnover in Mali. The number of positive cases of COVID-19 is approximately 8800 people and the number of deaths is 400 by the end of March 2021. The pandemic is beginning to stabilize in the country and around the world. As for industrial activity, after sharp declines in February (-9.4%), June (-8.4%) and March (-2.4%), industrial production had recovered strongly in July (54.6%) and April (16.7%). By the end of the year, the level of production had remained relatively stable (August-November), except for December, which was marked by a historic year-on-year decline of 11%. This slowed industrial growth marks the beginning of profound consequences on the industries' branches of activity. Thus, the turnover index has been in free fall throughout 2020, with a sharp 44% drop in May 2020. The industrial production index is reduced by 6% between June and December 2020. It can be said that the health crisis has had its impact on the level of industrial production especially during the second half of 2020. The industrial subsectors most negatively impacted are the production of basic metal products, machinery and electrical appliances n.e.c., other non-metallic mineral products, manufacturing industries, textile products, tobacco products, publishing products, printing and recorded media, production of paper, cardboard and paper products, and production of energy. Only branches of activity such as the production of rubber and plastics, the production of leather and travel goods and leather goods, the production of water and the production of chemicals seem to be doing well. Compared to the 2010-2019 period, the Covid-19 crisis has affected the various industrial subsectors much more drastically and severely (29% drop in December 2020 compared to previous years).
