WTO Negotiations and the MENA Region: A Preliminary Appraisal

Abstract

Thispaperdiscussessomeofthe issues importanttotheMiddleEastandNorthAfrican (MENA)countriesregarding the WTO negotiations and assesses the possible economic effects of further liberalization on the MENA region.TheeightpreviousroundsofmultilateraltradenegotiationsundertheGATT/WTOhaveplayedakeyroleinstimulatingthegrowthofinternationaltradeandglobalisation.Cananewmultilateralliberalizationroundboosttheworldeconomy,the MENA economies in particular? What would be the potential economic impacts of anewWTOtraderoundontheMENAregion?Agreatnumberofscenarioscanbeimagined on the process of the negotiations and their outcome. As a first attempt, we consider a small number of preliminary scenarios. The focus is on the MENA region.
