The Bulgarian Entrepreneur as a Manager – background, managerial approaches and some reflections on SMEs performance

Abstract

The paper presents the results of a study on the assumption that there is a link between the educational characteristics and experience of entrepreneurs and their effectiveness as managers, measured by the performance of the enterprises they have founded. The study’s methodology includes a review of publications looking at entrepreneurs in their managerial role, previous studies forming the profile of the entrepreneur as well as an analysis of the entrepreneurial activity and performance of SMEs in Bulgaria. This review of publications justifies the investigated assumption as a basis for interpretation of the results from an empirical survey on entrepreneurial management approaches and practices. The empirical survey shows that there are differences in the impact of entrepreneur’s education and previous experience on the SMEs performance at different sizes of the enterprise, as well as on different performance indicators. The findings prove to a certain extent the assumed links but pose a number of additional questions for further research.
