Does It Pay to Have a B Corp Certification? The European Perspective Through Climate Change and Consumer Trust

Abstract

This study explores whether B Corp Certification enhances firm performance in the context of climate action and consumer trust. As sustainability becomes central to business strategy, third‐party certifications like B Corp signal environmental and social commitment. Focusing on Sustainable Development Goal 13, we analyze 106 European B Corps certified between 2015 and 2020. Using panel data, we apply Ordinary Least Squares and spatial regression models to examine the relationship between B Lab scores and sales performance. Results reveal a complex dynamic: while certification supports trust and brand positioning, higher sustainability scores are not consistently associated with increased sales. This may reflect strategic trade‐offs or varying levels of consumer awareness across markets. Spatial effects are also significant, suggesting regional dynamics shape business outcomes. Overall, B Corp Certification emerges as a potential trust‐building tool in climate‐conscious markets, though its commercial impact varies by context.
