On the Social Permeability of the Borders of Municipal Units

Abstract

— The article examines the intensity of social interaction of residents of municipalities in the Russian Federation. To assess this interaction, data on users of electronic social networks are used, an information source that is gaining popularity in population geography research. As a quantitative indicator of such interaction, data on the friendship of users living in various municipalities, obtained from the open user profiles of the social network VKontakte are used. It is shown that social interaction intensity on average increases when municipalities have a common border. Interaction intensity data are then used to characterize the permeability of municipality borders. Among all segments of the borders of municipalities in the Russian Federation, the least permeable were selected—those for which the intensity of cross-border social interaction is the lowest. The social barriers identified in this way and their various configurations in the Russian Federation are described. Hypotheses about the reasons for the occurrence (and nonoccurrence) of such barriers are proposed. For several socially isolated groups of districts in the Khanty-Mansi and Yamalo-Nenets autonomous okrugs, possible reasons for isolation have been analyzed.
