Abstract

[eng] Clothing Sales Networks: Linking Distribution and Production Strategies . A clothing distribution survey has been carried out to observe the organisation of networked companies and producer-distributor relations. It shows, in particular, the roles played by the network heads, the links between these firms and independent retailers, and their relationships with their suppliers. These findings confirm and sometimes relativise the theoretical arguments currently put forward about network structures. . A significant contrast is found between the networks with a predominantly distribution-based strategy and little involvement in production and the networks with a clearly combined distribution and production strategy. Many networks behave like virtual vertically integrated businesses. Many seek to control the manufacturing function, either by manufacturing themselves or by dictating specifications to their suppliers. This practice enables them to place their network in a position of strength in relation to their suppliers. Own-label sales are also a way of setting a network apart from the others. . The diverse forms of network make their performance hard to measure. However, networks have increased their market share over isolated independent retail outlets due to the development of outlets at the budget end of the market. The decision to opt for vertical structures seems to be based on two trade-offs. The network head chooses between the entire profit from a chain-store structure and the partial profit from a more efficient franchised structure. The shops choose between the higher but riskier profits from independent trading (i.e. independent of a network) and the payment of a risk premium in return for partial insurance in a franchise structure. Retailer groups could be a good compromise when considering this last alternative.
