Eco-Innovation And Sustainable Production In Developing Countries. Cases Colombia And Mexico

Abstract

One of the main failures of innovation in developing countries is the difficulty that companies have to generate eco-innovations that address social, economic and environmental needs. Sectors such as manufacturing must permanently seek to reduce the negative impacts of their actions in order to generate sustainable benefits in society, as they protect the environment, make efficient use of resources and venture into global markets. Based on descriptive documentary research, processes of efficient use of raw materials and energy efficiency in sustainable production are analyzed in manufacturing companies from two developing countries, Colombia and Mexico, around the creation of eco-innovations. The results of the study show sustainable production activities in both countries, however, they do not generate eco-innovations despite the existence of indicators and policies that seek to measure and encourage sustainable innovation. Moreover, among the main difficulties is the lack of awareness of the eco-innovation´s implications and benefits in the industry. This raises the need to articulate economic agents that affect eco-innovative processes with respect to common objectives, decrease economic and cultural barriers around sustainability as an axis for development.
