Abstract

Using monetary currency demand method suggested by Tanzi, in this article the size of the informal economy in Mexico for the period 1970-2012 is estimated. Unlike other works, in this paper it is used a fairly extensive data base. The model gives very similar results to those and only major differences lie in the database used and the periods they cover. The results are consistent with the existence of a negative relationship between the growth of the formal economy and the size of the informal economy.
