Efficiency factors in the financing of renewable energy projects through crowdlending

Abstract

Even in the current critical situation, with governments and economies needing to reduce the levels of greenhouse gases, financing renewable energy investments remains challenging. Economic growth and technological development have driven the creation and growth of digital platforms and innovative solutions such as crowdlending. Crowdlending has a lot of potential because it embraces funders' motivations beyond mere economic ones. This work provides evidence on variables that influence the performance of crowdlending campaigns for renewable energy projects. We classified these variables into four groups: platform communication, firms' orientation towards sustainability, loan characteristics and social networking. Our results highlight the importance of effective communication between crowdlending participants. We recommend that promoters emphasise the project's sustainability orientation and remember the importance of using social networks.
