Abstract

Taking advantage of prefecture-level data in China from 2000 to 2024, this paper examines the implications of the strength of intellectual property law enforcement for the innovation efficiency of regional clusters. This research offers compelling evidence that the effectiveness of intellectual property law greatly boosts regional clusters’ innovation efficiency, and this effect is particularly evident among prefectures with lower government efficiency and higher political corruption. The finding is stable even after dealing with endogeneity concerns. In sum, this paper substantially advances the growing studies on the consequences of intellectual property protection and the triggers of innovation.
