Examining the synergistic mechanisms and effects of energy transformation and industrial development in China

Abstract

This study proposes a synergistic framework of "synergistic environment-synergistic structure-synergistic process" for energy transformation (ET) and industrial development (ID), takes Chinese industrial sectors as a research sample from 2011 to 2022, and establishes a synergistic degree model and fixed effect model to examine the impacts and mechanisms of Policy, Economic, Environment and Technology on the synergistic effect of ET and ID. The outcomes revealed the following: China's ET, ID and the level of synergy between the two are all on an upward trend from 2011 to 2022, but the overall level is low. Policy, Economic and Technology have a significant positive effect on the synergy between ET and ID, while Environment has a significant negative effect, and this finding still holds under the series of robustness tests. The impact of the core explanatory variables in promoting synergy between ET and ID will be more significant in energy-intensive industries compared to other industries. The transmission mechanism found that Policy, Economic, Environment and Technology can all promote synergies between ET and ID through ET mechanisms and ID mechanisms, but the transmission paths are not identical. The results of this study will be crucial for promoting energy-industry synergies and contributing to the goal of carbon neutrality.
