Violence and Growth in Latin America

Abstract

El presente trabajo analiza las repercusiones que sobre la economía de los países latinoamericanos tiene la elevada violencia criminal que padece la región. Las reflexiones de índole teórica se acompañan de un estudio empírico de datos de panel, que está formado por dieciséis países y abarca el periodo 1979-2001. El uso de distintas técnicas de estimación -que permiten considerar la presencia de efectos fijos para cada país y corregir la endogeneidad conjunta de las variables- pone de manifiesto que la violencia ha tenido un efecto negativo y significativo sobre la inversión y el crecimiento económico.
