Auswege aus dem Dilemma der empirischen Mittelstandsforschung

Abstract

Nach einhelliger Meinung zeichnen sich mittelständische Unternehmen vor allem dadurch aus, dass hier Eigentum und Leitung der Unternehmen in einer Hand liegen. Aber in der empirischen Mittelstandsforschung sowie beinahe allen Berichten, die sich mit der tatsächlichen Größe und der Bedeutung des Mittelstands auseinandersetzen, werden mittelständische Unternehmen mit kleinen und mittleren Unternehmen (KMU) gleichgesetzt. Der Grund hierfür liegt darin, dass mittelständische Firmen auf Basis amtlicher Daten nicht geeignet abgegrenzt werden können. In der Folge ist beinahe die gesamte empirische Mittelstandsforschung faktisch Forschung über kleine und mittlere Unternehmen. Um diesem Dilemma zu entgehen, wurden drei Sonderfragen in die ifo Konjunkturumfrage integriert, die eine sachgemäße Identifikation mittelständischer Unternehmen zulassen. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass die KMU-Quote die Mittelstandsquote erwartungsgemäß sehr stark überzeichnet. Mit den Sonderfragen bieten die Daten des ifo Instituts nunmehr die Möglichkeit, neue Impulse für die empirische Mittelstandsforschung zu liefern und so das beschriebene Dilemma zu überwinden.
