Klimawandel und Wintertourismus – Ein Vulnerabilitätsprofil für die Region Tirol

Abstract

Winter tourism is one of the tourism segments that will be most affected by the impacts of climate change due to its high dependency on snow. Knowledge of the degree of impact, the timing and the regions being most affected is necessary to develop adequate adaptation strategies. For this purpose, a ski season simulation model including snowmaking was applied to 111 ski areas in Tyrol (Austria) and South Tyrol (Italy). A multi-level snow reliability classification scheme was developed and put in relation to the economic relevance of winter tourism in tourism board regions. The northwest, northeast and southeast of the study area show a high vulnerability already in the 2030s. A consideration of climate change in the strategic planning of the tourism industry in these regions is inevitable.
