Environmental Stewardship and Technical Efficiency in Canadian Prairie Canola Production

Abstract

type="main" xml:lang="fr"> Dans la présente étude, nous examinons l'adoption de pratiques de gestion bénéfiques (PGB) chez les producteurs de canola des provinces des Prairies canadiennes et leur efficience technique. À l'aide de données tirées d'une enquête effectuée auprès de producteurs de canola, nous avons estimé une frontière de production stochastique de type Just-Pope. Le rendement a été modélisé comme étant fonction des éléments nutritifs et des précipitations. Une fonction linéaire d'inefficience comprend des variables agricoles spécifiques et un ensemble de variables binaires représentant l'adoption de PGB. Les variables de PGB telles que les analyses du sol, la planification de la gestion des éléments nutritifs et l'agriculture de précision sont liées à l'efficience technique tandis que d'autres indicateurs de PGB ne sont pas significatifs. Les estimations du modèle semblent être considérablement influencées par les problèmes d'humidité observés dans la région des Prairies au cours de l'année de récolte 2011. Les résultats de notre étude permettent de penser que, dans le cas des producteurs de canola de l'Ouest canadien, certaines PGB offrent une complémentarité potentielle pour l'amélioration de l'efficience technique et de la gérance environnementale.
