Abstract

Esta investigación tiene la intención de identificar las relaciones entre geografía y desarrollo en Bolivia. Dos grandes líneas de pensamiento se encuentran subyacentes en todo el estudio. Por una parte, aquella que plantea una causalidad unidireccional entre las variables geográficas y el desarrollo económico pasando por conceptos como los de urbanización, vocación productiva de las regiones, condiciones biofísicas positivas o adversas para la conservación de la salud, accesibilidad geográfica, escolaridad, etc. Por otra parte, aquella que plantea el supuesto que la organización social y los atributos de los trabajadores se encuentran en interacción con las variables geográficas. Bajo este criterio: a) el patrón de ocupación del territorio responde a la vez a restricciones geográficas y a movimientos de aglomeración y concentración de la población resultantes de la actividad económica de sus primeros ocupantes (y de los siguientes), b) las condiciones biofísicas adversas para la salud pueden ser mejoradas por el hombre por medio de la urbanización y otras acciones, c) la accesibilidad geográfica está asociada al balance entre costos y beneficios de la construcción de vías de comunicación.
