Abstract

"The labour market in East Germany will undergo a dramatic change due to the demographic development. The paper focuses on the impact of a substantially decreasing and ageing labour force. It discusses in particular how this could hinder the employment prospects in East Germany up to 2050. As the younger cohorts are far smaller than the older cohorts now approaching retirement, a shortage of qualified workers in the near future seems to become more likely than ever."
