Abstract

Le travail constitue un objet d'étude majeur de l'économiste John R. Commons. L'objectif de cet article est d'interroger la mesure dans laquelle la perspective de Commons offre un cadre théorique éclairant l'importance que peut avoir le travail dans la vie humaine individuelle et collective, à rebours de la conception instrumentale du travail dominante en économie. En nous focalisant surtout sur les travaux de l'auteur menés entre 1901 et 1919 ainsi que sur ceux écrits ultérieurement dans une perspective davantage théorique, nous montrons que Commons considère le travail comme une activité fondamentale du point de vue psychologique et surtout politique à travers sa défense de la \guillemotleft démocratie industrielle \guillemotright. Il appara\ⁱt alors comme un promoteur de la thèse de la \guillemotleft centralité du travail \guillemotright peu présente chez les économistes.
