How to apprehend trust at work?

Abstract

Although trust tends to be recognized as an essential resource for efficient, safe and satisfying work, few existing studies make it possible to apprehend it in the analysis of work and to act to reinforce it when this objective is desirable. The aim of this chapter is to contribute to filling this gap by proposing a conceptualization of trust at work that answers several questions: how can trust be characterized? How can we account for the need for trust at work? How can we position its various objects in relation to each other: self-confidence, confidence in others, confidence in the organization? How is trust established at work, and how can it deteriorate? Lastly, what conditions are conducive to trusting teamwork?
