Physical attractiveness, drug taking and gender differences

Abstract

This study investigates the relationship between adolescent physical attractiveness and drug‐taking behaviour, emphasizing the human capital and “pretty girl” effects on the decision to use drugs. Through the human capital effect, physically attractive adolescents are better positioned to accumulate human capital at a young age compared to their less attractive peers. Building on the economics and psychology literature, we propose a “pretty girl” effect by suggesting that physically attractive young women or girls are more likely to be approached by men or mature boys who may have access to drugs, and they are thus more likely to take drugs. These two effects imply a gender difference in the impact of adolescent physical attractiveness on drug‐taking behaviours. We find a robust gender difference in the effect of adolescent physical attractiveness on both the likelihood of having ever taken drugs and the types of drugs ever taken. La présente étude examine la relation entre l'attirance physique à l'adolescence et le comportement en matière de consommation de drogues, en mettant l'accent sur les effets du capital humain et de la « jolie fille » sur la décision de consommer des drogues. Grâce à l'effet du capital humain, les adolescents physiquement attirants sont mieux placés pour accumuler du capital humain à un jeune âge que leurs pairs moins attirants. En nous appuyant sur les recherches en économie et en psychologie, nous proposons un effet « jolie fille », suggérant que les jeunes femmes et les filles physiquement attirantes sont plus susceptibles d'être approchées par des hommes ou des garçons plus âgés qui peuvent avoir accès à de la drogue, et sont donc plus susceptibles d'en consommer. Ces deux effets suggèrent une différence entre les sexes dans l'incidence de l'attrait physique à l'adolescence sur les comportements liés à la consommation de drogues. Nous constatons une forte différence entre les sexes dans l'effet de l'attrait physique à l'adolescence sur la probabilité d'avoir déjà consommé de la drogue et sur les types de drogues consommées.
