Wandel und Stabilität in der Arbeitswelt — Das Beispiel der Zeitarbeit

Abstract

Temporary agency workers are part of the contingent workforce. They are hit hardest by labor demand changes. This paper summarizes empirical research on the effects of temporary agency work on agency workers’ outcomes such as job satisfaction, commitment, health, employability and social inclusion. These results are complemented by the author’s practical experiences at an international staffing agency. Sustainability of agency workers’ employment is an issue. Previous research stressed the stepping-stone hypothesis which interprets temporary agency work as atypical employment that leads to normal employment to some extent. New evidence refers to sustainability of employment in or outside the staffing industry. It turns out that 61 percent of German temporary agency workers remain in employment after one year.
