Industrial transaction platforms: Impact and archetypes for business model innovation

Abstract

The ongoing digital transformation is reshaping the manufacturing industry through the integration of advanced digital technologies. Among these technologies, digital platforms play a crucial role in enabling data, service, and product exchanges between various stakeholders. Unlike traditional linear business models, digital platforms facilitate multi-sided transactions, transforming existing network structures and enabling new forms of value creation. In particular, industrial transaction platforms present novel opportunities for digitizing business models within manufacturing that differ from other industry sectors, but have not been conceptualized in detail by extant literature. In response, this paper presents a systematic literature review (SLR) to provide a structured analysis of how industrial transaction platforms enable business model innovation (BMI) through transactions with stakeholders. Based on 89 scientific articles, we systematically examine the effects of industrial transaction platforms on the individual dimensions of the Business Model Canvas (BMC). The most frequently used dimension combinations enabled the identification of three clusters of business model archetypes, which illustrate how industrial transaction platforms drive BMI. These archetypes categorize the dominant patterns of transformation and highlight how digital transactions in industrial settings differ from those in other industries. Their understanding provides a foundation for studying the mechanisms of BMI and industrial transaction platforms, while highlighting the role of industrial transaction platforms as lever for BMI based on the interoperability of different business model dimensions. By providing insights for theory and practice, this study provides actionable insights for organizations seeking to leverage industrial transaction platforms effectively. The findings contribute to the ongoing discussion on BMI in manufacturing by providing a systematic framework for understanding how digital technologies enable BMI.
